films and videos at Free Word
on 1 March and 8 March

Free Word presents two special events to celebrate the 40th anniversary
of the Women’s Liberation Movement. Following the screening on 8 March,
there will be a panel discussion reflecting on the themes presented to mark
International Women’s Day. These works were not made with any political
movement in mind, but could they have been made without the barriers
being torn down by feminism? The programmes have been carefully selected
to keep a balance between poetry, wit, tenderness and home truths.
Monday 1 March 6.30 – 7.30pm
Work and Play looks at women as they undertake repetitive tasks of manual
skill, dance, and undertake classes in self-assertion.
Artists: Carey Young, Lucy Gunning, Breda Beban, Nicola Naismith, and Tracey Emin.
Monday 8 March 6.30 – 8.30pm
You and Me explores the myriad roles played by the mother, the daughter,
the lover and the self.
Artists: AK Dolven, Susana Mendes Silva, Liliane Lijn, Margaret Salmon,
Denise Webber, and Mona Hatoum
The panel discussion will chaired by independent curator Gill Hedley.
Speakers include Althea Greenan, Lucy Reynolds, Dr Jean Wainwright.
The film screening are free but booking is advisable.
